The Amherst College Women’s Track and Field Team is hosting a 5k race on Sunday, April 13, 2014 to raise funds for the MSA Coalition. Multiple Systems Atrophy, or MSA, is a little understood degenerative neurological disease that affects a close family member of one of our teammates. MSA is associated with the degeneration of nerve cells in specific areas of the brain. This cell degeneration causes problems with movement, balance, and other autonomic functions of the body such as bladder control or blood-pressure regulation. The cause of MSA is unknown and no specific risk factors have been identified. The MSA Coalition works to fund research towards a cure, in addition to providing support services for patients and raising awareness.
